Spanish Summer Camp Sneak Peak Video!

 Our mission is to encourage the exploration of  the Spanish language while  immersed in nature. To honor nature and engage fully it our surroundings while practicing and learning Spanish. Lessons will be guided with lots of room to discover thru play! Our classroom will be nature itself. Spanish literacy will be a daily part of Summer classes. Each day students will listen, speak, read and write in Spanish. All materials and supplies are included.  Spanish camp will be conducted in Spanish.

Ms. Irma is a 33 year veteran bilingual teacher that grew up in Inglewood, Ca. Not too far from the garden! She is the founder and owner of My Escuelita: Spanish for Kids (established in 2006) and a current 2nd grade teacher in Inglewood. Ms. Irma has a bilingual credential from LMU ('91) as well as a MA in Multicultural Education ( LMU '95). She has 3 adult children ages 19, 21 and 23. She is deeply passionate about teaching Spanish to children and gardens. Her favorite animal are owls. She hopes to see one this Summer!

Nestled in the private home (Inglewood, Ca)  of two teachers the Arts and Roots Garden  was designed for children. Our host family are parents, artists, musicians, teachers and part of the larger homeschool community. They've nurtured the garden and provide a space for learning, music, meetings, discovery and healing. Part of a larger network of healing spaces, Arts and Roots Garden is one of many gardens in Los Angeles where you can enjoy classes, camps and events. We're so lucky to enjoy this garden this Summer!

 In addition to the outdoor art studio, students will be able to enjoy multiple designated areas for art, music, movement, mud play, planting, dance, a Spanish library, observation of wildlife. Every inch of the garden is designed to inspire play, learn and exploration. There will be two credentialed adults each Friday. Private bathroom facilities are located in the garden itself and students will be chaperoned when they need to use the bathroom. A safe environment is our top priority this Summer.

Students will be able to enjoy learning about our garden friends too! Not only does the garden provide us with an abundance of trees, flowers, fruit plants, shrubs, grass, dirt and endless enjoyment of nature...It a is also home to several garden animals. There are resident hens making eggs, doves, birds, tortoise and a small small dog named Chiquita!  Let's not forget  all of the insects whose home is also in the garden. Students will be grouped in ages spans to encourage developmentally appropriate play and literacy activities. Instruction will be differentiated. Dual Immersion students will have specific literacy lessons to support their native like proficiency. Lessons will be guided and directed with a healthy dose of autonomy. All students will be able to make learning choices throughout the day. A goal of the camp is for students to make connections to nature, Spanish and each other. Working together to explore nature and learn a world language. Helping them to see themselves as a global citizen is also an important part of this camp. All language proficiencies are welcomed. Beginners, heritage, bilingual, native Spanish speakers and monolingual English speakers too!

*20 Hours of Spanish instruction

• 15 hours  guided Spanish literacy instruction during the 6 weeks class. (2.5/week)
• 5 additional hours of Spanish lessons to support the weekly theme/topic via Google Classroom. 
• Recorded lesson videos to support weekly learning. 
• Taught by Ms. Vazquez a bilingual credentialed veteran teacher of 33 years. 

*Digital Resources and photos

• Lifetime Access to a Private Google Classroom 
• All digital lesson plans, activity sheets, arts and crafts instructions, projects, photos, videos, Spanish resources and weekly summaries of class. 
• Digital resources will also have videos embedded for additional comprehension. 
• Missing class is never an issue. You can keep up in google classroom even while on vacation!

• Arts and craft supplies for 6 weeks worth of projects as well as online projects.

The teacher created Spanish curriculum will be inspired by 7 core content areas:  Science, Habitats (Animals, Insects, Plants), Ecology, Environmentalism, SEL/ Mindfulness and Geography. Literature books will be culturally relevant and we will compare our garden to those in Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries. 

We will learn about the Amazon in Brazil and El Yunque in Puerto Rico. The language learning approach will highlight: natural language approaches, multi-sensory experiences, TPR, play-based learning and exploration and will include Spanish literacy: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each day circle time will include an overview of the days events/schedules and plan in English. However Spanish will be the language of instruction, play and literacy. This will support our monolingual English speakers especially.

Our daily schedule will include:

Welcome, self guided art, crafts, literacy activities while friends arrive, circle time, music and movement, sun salutations, meditation/SEL, read a-louds, free choice play and exploration, games, snacks, guided literacy lessons, quiet reading time, and closing/cleaning ceremonies.
