Each Friday, campers will explore the garden’s living classroom—observing butterflies fluttering by, listening to birds sing in the trees, and spotting rabbits hopping across the path. They'll touch the textures of leaves, tree bark, and soil, and discover lizards sunbathing on rocks or insects hiding under leaves. With every walk and discovery, they’ll learn the Spanish names for animals, plants, trees, and more, building language through direct, joyful interaction with the natural world.

At Spanish Immersion Camp in the South Coast Botanical Garden, children will move, dance, play, and explore—engaging their whole bodies as part of their language learning experience. Each day includes joyful music and movement activities in Spanish, such as singing traditional songs, dancing to rhythms from Latin America, and playing interactive games that get them up and moving. Nature walks through winding garden paths invite stretching, balancing, and observation, while group games in the open air build coordination, social connection, and vocabulary. Through these multisensory experiences, campers not only strengthen their Spanish but also develop a deep, physical connection to the natural world around them.

During our Spanish immersion Summer camp at the South Coast Botanical Garden & visit to the SOAR Butterfly exhibit, children will explore the fascinating world of tropical butterflies—species not typically found in Southern California. The guided tour, conducted entirely in Spanish.
Campers will embark on a bilingual science and nature adventure that begins in the Host and Nectar Garden, where they will explore the plants essential to a butterfly’s life cycle. The journey continues at the Emergence Chamber, where they may have the exciting opportunity to observe a butterfly hatching from its chrysalis. The experience concludes in a vibrant pavilion filled with hundreds of butterflies flying all around. Bilingual vocabulary words and targeted lesson plans will accompany this activity to support Spanish language development and deepen students’ understanding of the natural butterfly world.
