The main objective is to facilitate a class that meets the developmental, educational and linguistic needs of children ages 6 -10 using best practices in world language education.
My classes are high energy, engaging, fun, hands on and I use lots of realia (real objects). I provide the instructional and craft materials and provide parents with a portal...one place that holds all resources and class pictures.
This class will use a lot of TPR: Total Physical Response, Music and Movement paired with Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing at a developmentally appropriate level. I will also incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) as well as Social Science, Cultural Responsive Curriculum and Mindfulness.
Students in this class will including listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish. Students will review and practice the Spanish Alphabet, Syllables, Sight Words, Numbers 1-20, Colors, Shapes, Feelings words and identify the parts of a calendar (days of the week and months of the year). All lessons will be integrated with literature that supports the theme or lesson objective. Students will have weekly dictado and lead class in games and scavenger hunts to support student engagement.
Students will learn the essential components of Spanish Literacy:
Letters, Sounds, Syllables, words, complex sentences, parts of speech, grammar rules, words that rhyme, opposites, poetry, riddles and cognates.
Students will use an interactive notebook throughout the class to capture all lessons and I will use Sombrero Times Level 1 Spanish books to augment the lessons.
Students will listen to stories, identify the parts of the book, main characters and the order of sequence of the plot. The culminating project will be a book making activity. Students will make their own book inspired by a traditional Spanish poet/poem from the book: "Arroz con leche or Los Pollitos Dicen." Additional books are in the photos below.
